The food we eat is deeply connected to our culture. You can learn a lot about a particular culture by exploring their food. For this year’s Xmas party, Vietnamese developers at our hub will be doing just that, learn more about their Norwegian employers culture through food.
There is no other better way to experience about another culture than trying their food. Next week all Software Engineers working for their Norwegian employers at our hub in Ho Chi Minh city will get to experience authentic Scandinavian cuisine at Danish restaurant, Mad House in Thao Dien. Even though not 100% Norweigan, this is the closest we can do to bring Norwegian culture to the table (literally) in Ho Chi Minh city.
What food tells us about culture?
It is more than just food! Food can help us understand not only culture, but also history and climate of a country without travelling there. On the other side of the story, we as a society are getting more global, whether we like it or not. A common issue in employment is cultural misunderstanding. Small or large businesses, companies now hire people from overseas in their local office
However, having a focus on building and connecting people through culture can help reduce this issue and create more understanding. Through food, we get a taste of someone else’s view, see things from their perspectives.
Open to Norwegian culture
One thing I have learned living many years in Ho Chi Minh City is, how open Vietnamese are to accept other cultures. I simply love that. This is evident in the many international cafes and restaurants popping up in Ho Chi Minh City, every week (at least it seems like that to me :).
The high number of attendees this year means one thing- Vietnamese developers at our hub are indeed eager to experience their Norwegian employer’s culture. Let’s have a great Xmas lunch (Jule Lunsj in Norwegian) next week!
